Kammerhljómsveitin ÍsafoldThe Chamber Orchestra Ísafold gives a concert at Kjarvalsstaðir, Thursday 25 June at 8 p.m. The programme consists of contemporary music by the composers Nico Muhly, Daníel Bjarnason, Högni Egilsson, Viktor Orri Árnason and Gunnar Karel Másson.

The Chamber Orchestra Ísafold recently organized a competition for young composers to give them a opportunity to work with a chamber orchestra and have their works played. The participation was far beyond expectations and ended up with three winners: Högni Egilsson, Viktor Orri Árnason and Gunnar Karel Másson. At Ísafold’s concert at Kjarvalsstaðir the works by those young composers will be playd along with the music By all means by the young American composer, Nico Muhly.  Last but not least the Ísafold Orchestra plays a newly composed cello concert by the composer, conductor and the artistic director of Ísafold, Daníel Bjarnason, with Sæunn Þorsteinssdóttir as a soloist.

The Ísafold Chamber Orchestra was founded in 2003. The group’s first project was a concert tour around the country, but since that time the group has held several concerts. Ísafold specializes in the performance of 20th-century and contemporary music, emphasizing meticulous performance and a diverse repertoire. The group’s objective is that its music reaches as many ears as possible, which is why Ísafold has worked with a number of artists from a number of different fields.

The members of Ísafold have all demonstrated preeminent talent in their respective fields, some having received international recognition. Several Icelandic composers have written compositions especially for the group, including Haukur Tómasson, who was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2004. The group continues to receive strong reviews wherever they perform and garners attention for its meticulous and powerful performances in concert. The group released its first album with record label 12 Tónar in 2007, which included pieces by Schönberg, Sørensen, and Takemitsu. In 2008 Ísafold won the Icelandic Music Awards for Performer of the Year in the category of Classical and Contemporary Music. At the beginning of the same year Ísafold was named Reykjavík’s Music Group of 2008.
