The Cultural Prize of DV for Gallery D project

Menningarverðlaun DV

Wednesday march 10, 2010 Reykjavik Art Museum received the Cultural Prize of DV for its exhibition series in Gallery D. The series started in February 2007 and is now presenting its 16th project with photographer Katrín Elvarsdóttir. The director of the project is Yean Fee Quay curator and head of exhibition department of Reykjavik Art Museum. Reykjavik Art Museum would like to use the opportunity to thank the artists themselves for their commitment and dedication. They have all created work specifically for gallery D and worked hard to make the most of the opportunity.

In the fall of 2006, the Reykjavik Art Museum presented a large exhibition at its downtown location, Hafnarhús, in which a new generation of artists was introduced. The Apostles’ Clubhouse, as the exhibition was called, brought a new energy to the museum. The exhibition showed what many emerging artists are capable of, if they are given the opportunity to present their work in a professional setting. There was ample reason to follow up on the initiative.
At the beginning of 2007, the museum therefore introduced a new series of exhibitions intended to give promising young artists an opportunity to take the next step in their careers with one-person exhibitions. A special gallery, referred to simply as “D”, was set aside for the series.
The intentions behind the series are twofold: both to mentor young artists and to introduce them to the museum audience. Even if many of the artists are well known in the small alternative art scene in Reykjavik, none of them has shown before in the country’s larger museums. The diverse group of museum visitors has shown great interest in this initiative and continues to seek out the exhibitions and learn of the artists’ ideas.
The majority of the exhibitions are curated by Yean Fee Quay, other curators are Hafthor Yngvason director of the museum, Ólöf K. Sigurdardóttir and Thorbjörg Gunnarsdóttir.
Artists participating in the D-Gallery project are: Birta Guðjónsdóttir, Geirþrúður Hjörvar, Sigurður Guðjónsson, Daníel Björnsson, Jóhannes Atli Hinriksson, Karlotta Blöndal, Ingirafn Steinarsson, Gunnhildur Hauksdóttir, Jóna Hlíf Halldórsdóttir, Andrea Maack, Pétur Már Gunnarsson, Jeannette Castioni, Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, Ryan Parteka, Dodda Maggý and Katrín Elvarsdóttir who is now exhibiting in Gallery D.
Next artists to be presented in the Gallery are Hulda Rós Guðnadóttir and Bjarni Sigurbjörnsson.
