Homage Gallery Talk - Ásmundarsafn, Sunday 11 September 3 p.m.
Artist Magnús Árnason and biologist Dr. Guðmundur Eggertsson will participate in a gallery talk in relation to Árnason´s installation Homage, which opened on Saturday 30th April in the dome of the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum. The work addresses the notion of spontaneous generation and its refutation by experiment, with allusion to the experiment of French biologist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).
Magnús Árnason’s work plays with the boundaries between the real and the fictive, truth and poetry. In recent works Árnason has dealt mainly with the subject of nature and natural history and thus departed from the folkloric references that appeared in his earlier work. The sciences and their history have themselves become a subject for investigation, in which ‘the scientifically proven fact’ is challenged. By taking a step backward in that history instead of following the direct path of progress, the artist attempts to rediscover new ‘truths’ and their aesthetic values, which otherwise are obscure to us.
The talk will take place in Icelandic.
