Preview: Tales of a Sea Cow by artist Etienne De FranceReykjavik Art Museum in collaboration with Reykjavik Shorts&Docs and the French Embassy in Iceland introduces a special off venue event; Tales of a Sea Cow a film by artist Etienne De France. After the screening Etienne De France sits down for Q&A with Icelandic filmmaker Ragnheiður Gestsdóttir.
Tales of a Sea Cow describes how a team of scientists has achieved the first ever decoding of animal communication; for the first time in history, they translated the song of a marine mammal - the Steller’s sea cow-, a species, which was until now thought extinct since 1768, until its rediscovery in 2007, along the coasts of Greenland.
Born in 1984 in Paris, Etienne de France is visual artist living between Paris, France and Reykjavik, Iceland. He received a B.A in Art History in Paris (2002-2005), and then completed a B.A in Visual arts in the Iceland Art Academy of Reykjavik (2005-2008). Etienne de France works with a wide variety of media and is focusing on different themes related to nature and landscape, sciences, experimental architecture and story-telling. He conceives his works as metaphorical proposals, projects that mix fiction and reality, a way allowing the artist to create a poetic distance, a metaphorical zone, where the doubt can exist, allowing to wonder and stimulate critical thinking. In 2012, he completed and presented his project Tales of a Sea Cow, which includes his first feature length movie.
